The ISDA was founded in the year 1995. A group of physicians with interest in Sleep Medicine from different states thought of starting a society at a National level dedicated to the discipline . The lead was taken by Dr J C Suri who is credited to having established the first Sleep Laboratory at Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi. Members were drawn from varied disciplines like internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, neurology, psychiatry, pediatrics, ENT & Dentistry. The aim of the association is to discuss and disseminate knowledge on current understanding of sleep disorders amongst medical professionals. It also provides a platform for professionals to discuss and put across their views on various aspects related to Sleep Medicine.
The Association has been regularly organizing conferences and workshops towards furthering their aim. The first such International Conference was held in Delhi at Ashok Hotel in March’96 and then in Feb 1997. Subsequent conferences (SLEEPCON) starting from 2005 are being held annually at various cities. The Association has also organized several workshops on Sleep Medicine and Non invasive Ventilation. Since 2013 the Association has been holding courses in Advanced Sleep Medicine. The Association has also been organizing workshops at the Annual Conference of Chest Physicians – NAPCON every year and at the Association of Physicians of India.
In view of the scarcity of trained sleep specialists the Society started an one year training course at few centers of excellence culminating in an examination for award of a certification of Fellowship in Sleep Medicine. The Association has awarded Honorary fellowships to few senior members who had contributed significantly in the advancement of sleep medicine in the country. Since 2010 the course being conducted in several centers across the country. The society in due course plans to start an one year training course for sleep technicians in view the great scarcity of this category of technical staff in the country.
The Association is also publishing a journal “The Indian Journal of Sleep Medicine”, the only journal in the country dedicated fully to Sleep Medicine since December 2005.The journal in published quarterly and is indexed with index Copernicus, google scholar, DRJI and I2OR
