What is the nomination process?
Nominations will be accepted on behalf of one’s self or a colleague. If nominating someone else, please confirm with the nominee that they would be willing to serve and agree to be nominated. Items helpful, but not required, to aid in selection include: letter of interest, summary of history in the sleep field, publications, CV, and/or professional resume. Nominations should be sent to [email protected] by November 30, 2017.

What is the selection process?
During the first four years of the World Sleep Society, our bylaws require officers to be elected by the Governing Council. All nominees will be forwarded to the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will review qualifications and present the candidate(s) to the Governing Council for a vote. Starting in 2019, as required by our bylaws, all officers including the president-elect position, will be determined by a vote by the individual members.

When will a selection be made?
Nominations will be accepted until November 30, 2017. The Governing Council will announce a selection on or before January 1, 2018.

Does the nominee need to be a member of World Sleep Society?
No. Nominations will be accepted from non-members. Although membership is required for all WSS officer positions per our bylaws.

What are the primary duties of the position?
World Sleep Society bylaws indicate: The President is the official spokesperson of the WORLD SLEEP SOCIETY and acts on its behalf as authorized by the Governing Council or as otherwise required when authorization of the Governing Council is not feasible. Read Section A. Officers of our bylaws for more details.

Does the World Sleep Society have a President-Elect selected at this point?
No. As we transition both WSF and WASM into the newly merged World Sleep Society, a president-elect and eventually the president position has not been determined. The Governing Council strives to be both democratic and transparent within the governance process. We are accepting nominations for the one current open position of president-elect, and will follow the process of selecting the officer per our bylaws. We welcome individuals to express interest in the president-elect position. Names who are not selected for the one open position will be forwarded to other committee chairs for possible involvement within the awareness, education, and scientific programs.

When will elections take place?
The next election will occur at World Sleep 2019 in Vancouver, Canada from September 20-25, 2019. All two-year term officer positions and regional representatives will be voted upon. We encourage individuals to express their interest early in the election process, and volunteer in one or more of the World Sleep Societies programs of awareness, education, or scientific content committees.
