Masterclass from 2nd Edition of the International Master in Sleep Medicine

Virtual Masterclass on November 18, 2021

The reason for the Masterclass is the official presentation of the upcoming 2nd Edition of the International Master in Sleep Medicine taking place in 2022 at the European University in Madrid.  It will broadcasted in real time to everyone showing interest in the event and registering from around the world. The content of the masterclass will be a case presentation of a patient with simultaneous severe restless legs syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD and post-stroke.

The main take-home message of the case presentation is to show how sleep-related conditions can affect cognition and why their treatment can be relevant for the overall (incl. cognitive-) wellbeing of the patient.

Besides the clinical aspects, we will discuss in detail how the pathophysiologies of the different disorders interact with one another. We will discuss recent advances in the pathophysiology of each of these conditions and how to evaluate them in clinical practice (i.e., evaluation of brain iron deficiency by means of transcraneal sonography, clinical use of plasma and CSF biomarkers in AD for therapeutic decision-making, effects of intermittent hypoxia on Beta-amyloids, relevance of SDB and RLS in post-stroke, etc.).

The presentation will be carried out by Diego Garcia-Borreguero, MD, PhD and will be targeted to a public with an advanced knowledge in sleep medicine, such as the regular membership of World Sleep Society. Some aspects of the talk will be innovative even for the sleep specialists. However, we will make a substantial effort to make the content of case presentation understandable and interesting to every public, even those with beginner´s knowledge of the field. The duration of the case presentation will be 45 min and will be followed by a 30 min discussion.
