Award Opportunities

Two Young Investigator Award opportunities are available at the Latin American Federation of Sleep Societies (FLASS) scientific congress on sleep medicine from November 9-11, 2018:
  • Sergio Tufik Award – To the best clinical or basic-clinical work
  • Ricardo Velluti Award – To the best basic research work
Young Investigators must apply to FLASS by August 15, 2018. Winners of the award will receive $750 USD and a complimentary registration to attend World Sleep 2019 in Vancouver, Canada in September 2019.

Sergio Tufik Young Investigator Award

Named to honor the memory of a pioneer in sleep research, the Sergio Tufik Young Investigator Award will be presented at the XVII Congress of the Latin American Federation of Sleep 2018 in Uruguay. The award recognizes research efforts by new investigators considered the best clinical or basic-clinical work.

The 2018 award will be made available to:

1. Either young investigators new to the field of sleep medicine & research who are no more than 10 years past receiving their PhD or MD; or
2. Senior investigators new to the field of sleep medicine & research (first publication of a first author abstract or journal article in the sleep field is within the last 3 years); and
3. Their scientific work was accepted for presentation at the FLASS congress in Uruguay.

About Sergio Tufik: Dr. Tufik received his PhD in Psychopharmacology from the Paulista School of Medicine and Full Professor of the Psychobiology Department of the Federal University of São Paulo. As the Scientific advisor of FAPESP, CAPES and researcher 1A of CNPq, Dr. Tufik is a specialist in Sleep Medicine, coordinating the Center for Sleep Studies (Sleep Institute), which is one of the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers – CEPID special program of FAPESP. Dr. Tufik is also a member of the Latin American Federation of Sleep Societies, American Association of Sleep Medicine, Sleep Research Society, World Sleep Federation, among other renowned international scientific institutions that work in the field of sleep medicine research.


Ricardo Velluti Young Investigator Award

Named to honor the memory of a pioneer in sleep research, the Ricardo Velluti Young Investigator Award will be presented at the XVII Congress of the Latin American Federation of Sleep 2018 in Uruguay. The award recognizes research efforts by new investigators considered the best basic research work.

About Ricardo Velluti: Dr. Velluti is a Free Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at U. CLAEH in Uruguay. He was previously a Professor of Physiology & Chairman of the Physiology Department, Universidad de la Republica, Montevideo, Uruguay. He has published over 63 publications and has authored two books dealing with sleep, the auditory system, and neurophysiology.
