The Sleep Society of Thailand (SST) was established in 2009. In 2018, SST successfully advocated for the formal recognition of sleep medicine as a medical subspecialty by the Medical Council of Thailand, leading to the establishment of a two-year fellowship program across four core disciplines: internal medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, and otolaryngology. To support the training of allied health professionals, SST has conducted an annual 5-day basic sleep technology course since 2010, along with a 4-day advanced course offered biennially. SST conducts annual sleep technologist certification examination to standardize sleep technologists in Thailand. SST has also implemented international accreditation standards to enhance the quality and consistency of sleep laboratories throughout the country. The society has published evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, including the Thai Guideline for Childhood Obstructive Sleep Apnea (2013), Clinical Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Adults (2018), and the Insomnia Guideline (expected in 2025). SST is a founding member of the ASEAN Sleep Federation—renamed the Federation of South-East Asian Sleep Medicine (FSSM)—and remains an active participant in the Asian Society of Sleep Medicine (ASSM). Thailand has proudly hosted several major international sleep conferences, including the 4th ASSM Meeting (2023), the 2nd ASEAN Sleep Congress (2013), the 2nd World Association of Sleep Medicine Congress (2007), and the 3rd Asian Sleep Research Society Congress (2000). SST’s commitment to public outreach has been recognized through consecutive World Sleep Day Activity Awards from 2017 to 2024. These accomplishments underscore SST’s leadership in advancing sleep medicine in Thailand through education, certification, research, and international collaboration.
